The Department of Defence engaged SHAPE, under a subcontracted arrangement with Hansen Yuncken, to deliver new facilities at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia. The project forms part of the Edinburgh Defence Precinct Mid-Term Refresh and Relocation of Units from Elizabeth North Training Depot Programme of Works, supporting the relocation of Army Reserve and Cadet functions into a purpose-built precinct.
The scope includes the design and construction of two new facilities for Army Reserve and Army Cadet operations, along with the essential infrastructure needed to support them. Works also include new firefighting water, sewer and stormwater systems, site electrical services and integration with the existing infrastructure across the base.
Delivered under a design and construct model, the project requires close coordination across design, services and construction teams to ensure the facilities meet Defence requirements and align with the broader operational needs of the Edinburgh precinct. SHAPE’s role also includes managing the interface between the new buildings and the live defence environment.
Working within an active defence setting brings important planning and coordination requirements, particularly around security, access and integration with existing services. These factors are being carefully managed through detailed staging, stakeholder coordination and a delivery approach designed to maintain progress while minimising disruption.
Once complete, the project will provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that bring dispersed functions together in a single location. The investment will strengthen training and administration infrastructure in South Australia and support the long-term operational needs of Army Reserve and Cadet units within one of Australia’s key defence hubs.
