The University of Western Australia engaged SHAPE to refurbish its NanoSIMS Laboratory within the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis in Perth. Home to Australia’s only two NanoSIMS instruments for the past 20 years, the facility plays a critical role in advanced research. The project was carefully planned and delivered in three separable portions to minimise disruption to ongoing building operations and research activity.
The first stage upgraded an existing meeting room and converted a former laboratory into a postgraduate office. At the same time, structural strengthening works were completed in the basement to prepare for the future installation of the highly sensitive NanoSIMS HR instrument. These early works created the foundation for the next stages of the refurbishment.
The second stage involved demolition and refurbishment of existing laboratory areas to create a dedicated instrument room, control room and sample preparation lab. SHAPE completed floor and wall removals, new partitions and enabling works, ensuring all dust-generating activities were finished ahead of equipment delivery. Close coordination with the equipment supplier helped align program requirements and reduce installation risk.
The final stage delivered a full refurbishment of internal spaces to create a contemporary meeting and collaboration area. New finishes, lighting, furniture, audiovisual systems and acoustic ceilings transformed the environment into a functional, technology-enabled space that better supports staff and researchers.
By carefully sequencing the works and maintaining proactive communication with stakeholders, SHAPE delivered the project on schedule within an occupied and operational facility. The result is a modernised laboratory and support environment that strengthens UWA’s research capability while improving day-to-day functionality for its users.
