Revitalising Union House for the Next Generation of Students

Revitalising Union House for the Next Generation of Students

SHAPE was engaged by the University of Adelaide to deliver a major refurbishment of the state heritage-listed Union House building – a key part of the Union Building Precinct redevelopment.

The project transformed underused areas across five floors into modern, flexible spaces, including a new student fitness hub, upgraded amenities, flexible study and recreation areas, and a new restaurant and function space operated by the National Wine Centre. All works were carefully staged to maintain operations in live areas such as the UniBar, prayer rooms, and theatre throughout construction.

Navigating Complex Challenges

With a layered construction history dating back to the 1970s, Union House presented significant complexity. Much of the existing services were undocumented, requiring detailed site investigations and early 3D modelling to plan the construction of a new services riser within a decommissioned staircase, alongside upgrades to the existing riser and plantroom. Hidden structural elements, hazardous materials, and heritage requirements added further challenges.

Careful sequencing, thorough buildability reviews, and close collaboration with heritage consultants helped maintain programme while protecting the building’s original character. Innovative solutions, such as carbon fibre slab reinforcement, allowed major upgrades without invasive demolition works.

Strengthening Partnerships

Union House marked SHAPE’s first major project with the University of Adelaide in several years. Through proactive delivery and collaborative problem-solving, SHAPE successfully delivered a highly challenging project on time, helping to re-establish a strong partnership and leading to multiple further project awards across the University’s campuses.
