A new learning hub for Seaview Downs Primary School

Seaview Downs Primary School was redeveloped through a staged programme delivered by SHAPE on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, allowing the state school to remain fully operational throughout construction. The scope included demolition of six ageing transportable buildings and construction of a new single-storey facility with open learning environments, high ceilings, and a central hub that connects each stage of the building. New external play spaces, fire tanks, and a pump room were also delivered as part of the works, with the layout designed to capture coastal views and support community use outside school hours.

With the works taking place within a live school environment and in close proximity to occupied spaces across a smaller school campus, the programme was carefully planned to support the school’s day-to-day needs. Disruptive activities were scheduled during school holidays wherever possible, with late shifts also used to avoid impacts on the curriculum.

Access and safety were critical throughout, with temporary pathways, fencing, and traffic controls regularly reviewed and adjusted at the end of each stage to maintain clear separation between students, staff, and construction activity. The steep site topography added further complexity, influencing both plant selection and the sequencing of external works.

SHAPE maintained regular coordination with the School’s representatives and project stakeholders to confirm look-ahead activities, noise impacts, and temporary access arrangements. As a result, the project delivered a cohesive, modern learning environment centred around a shared hub, achieved through a staged programme that maintained safe campus movement and continuity of school operations.
