Employing modular construction for rapid assembly and seamless integration

Merici College sought to expand its facilities by adding a modern and efficient learning facility with four new classrooms. The SHAPE team were engaged to accommodate this expansion around the academic calendar to ensure minimal disruption to the students and teachers. To meet these requirements, modular construction was the preferred method, allowing for construction during the summer school holidays prior to the 2024 school year commencing and integration with existing infrastructure.

Merici College proved to be a collaborative and approachable client throughout the project. The client set clear expectations from the outset, understanding the importance of adhering to tight deadlines. Open dialogue during meetings facilitated discussions on additional works, such as the resurfacing of an existing tennis court to enhance the school’s amenities.

KLMSA, the modular construction company SHAPE acquired just under a year ago, designed and built the modules for the Canberra team, with the goal to provide a modern, high-quality and efficient learning environment. Eight modules were produced in the Kinglake manufacturing facility to form the building that contained four classrooms divided by operable walls.

Thanks to the efficiency of modular construction, the new classrooms were constructed while site preparation works were taking place and delivered onsite in late December, showcasing the speed and precision of the construction process. Despite the holiday season, the project remained on schedule, with students occupying the classrooms by late January.

The finished classrooms met high standards of quality, seamlessly integrating with the existing school infrastructure. From the design phase to the final touches, meticulous attention to detail ensured a cohesive and functional addition to the campus. The project’s success relied on the smooth coordination between various stakeholders, resulting in a seamless transition for students and staff.

As part of the project’s environmental initiatives, rainwater tanks were recommended to the client, serving to promote water conservation and reduce the school’s environmental footprint.

The construction of four new classrooms at Merici College exemplifies the successful collaboration between client and contractor, resulting in a seamless expansion of educational facilities. Through effective communication, innovative solutions, and a commitment to quality, the project was delivered on time and to the highest standards around the academic calendar.
