North Ward's favourite local gets a modern makeover in partnership with valued client Australian Venue Co.

SHAPE has completed the refurbishment of Hotel Allen, a two-storey hospitality landmark in North Ward, Townsville, delivered in partnership with Australian Venue Co. Originally built in 1942, the venue occupies a prominent 6,186 m² corner site and has long served as a gathering place for locals and visitors across the region. The project focused on transforming the ground-floor licensed venue into a revitalised hospitality destination while honouring the character and legacy that have defined Hotel Allen for more than eight decades.

The scope of works encompassed extensive aesthetic upgrades across key public areas including the sports bar, beer garden, bistro, gaming room and alfresco dining areas. Alongside these hospitality fitout works, the project delivered significant building services improvements, including a new main switchboard, grease trap, mechanical plant and fire services upgrades. Together, these works modernised the venue’s functionality and infrastructure to support its long-term operation as a major hospitality destination in North Queensland.

SHAPE worked closely with Australian Venue Co throughout the project, maintaining a collaborative approach to planning, coordination and quality oversight. The refurbishment was carefully staged to manage interface with ongoing works in other areas of the hotel, ensuring efficient delivery while minimising impact on the broader programme. Regular engagement with the client team allowed decisions to be made quickly and the project to progress to a high standard.

Delivering a refurbishment within a heritage-associated venue of this scale and profile presented a range of coordination challenges. Careful attention was required to preserve the familiar character and atmosphere that patrons associate with Hotel Allen, while achieving the functional and aesthetic improvements called for by the brief. Services coordination across the new switchboard, mechanical plant and fire systems required thorough planning to sequence works efficiently and avoid conflict with existing infrastructure across the site.

The completed Hotel Allen reopened to the public as a revitalised hospitality venue that balances upgraded functionality with the heritage atmosphere the community values. The refurbishment strengthens Hotel Allen’s position as a key destination in North Queensland, offering renewed spaces for locals and visitors to gather while supporting the ongoing revitalisation of Townsville’s North Ward precinct. The project reflects SHAPE’s capability to deliver complex hospitality refurbishments with a commitment to quality, heritage sensitivity and close client collaboration.
