SHAPE delivered the refurbishment of the Grand View Hotel, Queensland’s oldest continuously operating hotel, in collaboration with BSPN Architecture, the Kick On Group and Glow Worm. The project combined careful heritage restoration with modern hospitality upgrades, blending fitout and new build works to revitalise the venue while preserving its historic character.
The scope included refurbishing the lounge, sports bar and gaming room, constructing a new commercial kitchen, and demolishing and rebuilding the upper terrace to enhance functionality and guest experience. These upgrades incorporated adaptive design solutions to meet modern operational needs while respecting the venue’s heritage-listed status. All heritage elements were protected, and any replacements were crafted or sourced to match the originals. Early in the build, a well dating back to the early 1800s was uncovered, prompting a redesign to ensure its preservation.
Project success was driven by close collaboration between SHAPE, BSPN Architecture, the Grand View Hotel, the Kick On Group and Glow Worm, each contributing specialist expertise to achieve an outstanding result. The transformation generated strong community interest, with regular updates shared online and residents visiting to view progress. Tickets to the hotel’s reopening event sold out within minutes, reflecting widespread community excitement.
The refurbishment has renewed a cherished landmark, securing its future for generations to come.
