Duration: 26 Weeks
Project Size: 210m2 / 8 Modules

Delivering metropolitan Sydney’s first modular crisis accommodation.

Funded by the NSW Government’s $2.4 million Core and Cluster Program, this collaborative project brought together SHAPE, Women’s Community Shelters and community and project partners to deliver a high quality, scalable solution to the growing demand for crisis accommodation across New South Wales.

Designed, manufactured, and installed in just 26 weeks, the modular expansion doubled Biyani House’s capacity for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. Eight double storey modules were manufactured at SHAPE’s Victorian facility in 10 weeks, ensuring consistent quality in a controlled environment. While manufacturing was underway, onsite works prepared the Sydney site for delivery. On the first day of Homelessness Week in August 2025, the modules were transported by road and craned into place in a single day while community members looked on.

Once the modules were in place onsite works took 16 weeks to complete, with the finished project featuring four self contained one bedroom homes, increasing capacity from two families to six. Architects Das Studio designed warm, dignified spaces with weatherboard cladding and biophilic planter boxes to enhance residents’ connection to nature. Each module was pre fitted with finishes, fixtures, and services before leaving the factory, reducing onsite trade overlap and delays.

Thanks to the combined efforts of our partners, including Das Studio’s design, DT Infrastructure’s pro bono project management, Revesby Workers’ Club’s site provision, Temple & Webster’s interior styling, and Alinta Energy’s energy efficient appliances. Biyani House now offers safe, independent homes with minimal disruption to shelter operations.

This project is a clear example of how modular construction can deliver urgent, high quality housing fast, with a scalable approach that can be replicated for crisis accommodation and social housing throughout New South Wales, and the country.
