Client: The University of Newcastle
Delivery Model: Design Completion & Construction
Location: Newcastle, NSW
Duration: 18 weeks
SHAPE was engaged to deliver the next phase of works at the University of Newcastle’s Great Hall, one of the University’s most significant built assets. Initially planned as a modular build, the project scope evolved during the design completion phase to in-situ construction.
The works involved the design and construction of a new external kitchen and entertaining area to support catering for Great Hall events. The new facilities were delivered to provide enhanced functionality and improved operational outcomes for this important venue.
Delivered under a GC21 design completion contract, the project incorporated new build elements, steel and concrete construction, prefabrication methods, and the integration of technical requirements for a commercial kitchen. Construction took place immediately adjacent to the University’s most sensitive heritage asset, requiring meticulous planning and stakeholder management. With more than 50 University representatives engaged in the oversight process, SHAPE placed strong emphasis on collaboration and communication to balance heritage considerations, operational needs, and design intent.
The completed project provided the University with modern catering facilities that elevated the Great Hall’s capability as a premier events venue while respecting its heritage significance.
