SHAPE and The Salvation Army collaborate to deliver new family violence refuge in Darwin

SHAPE were engaged by The Salvation Army under a Lump Sum Contract to deliver their newest family violence refuge facility to service the greater Darwin Community. The project included the construction of 10 Crisis Units, Administration Facility with 24-hour staffing along with Communal and Children play areas providing a haven for 40 women and 70 children yearly. Housing units embrace a trauma informed design, with calming palates and furnishings to compliment functional and low maintenance facilities for short term reprieve.

The Salvation Army collaborated with SHAPE through an extensive value engineering period with budget constraints for the charity organisation, whilst still ensuring quality and well-considered facilities were delivered.

The project included provisions for additional infrastructure for future additions to occur with ease.  All works occurred on already occupied land with The Salvation Army Corps building remaining active throughout construction. SHAPE was required to carefully consult with both the Corps team as well as the neighbouring properties to complete invasive works. This created many challenges requiring careful planning and consideration to the staging and methodology of works. Furthermore, the nature of the facility required all communications to be sensitive to confidentiality.

The Consultant & Client team collaborated with SHAPE for consideration of construction materials in the northern climates, availability and maintenance constraints and general construction practices.

SHAPE is honoured to have played a pivotal role in delivering this much needed facility for the greater Darwin community.
