The City of Onkaparinga engaged SHAPE to deliver the Hopgood Theatre Refurbishment at Noarlunga Centre, upgrading a much-loved community venue used by local audiences, performers, and schools. The scope spanned the auditorium and foyer, front-of-house and bar areas, bathrooms, and comprehensive backstage upgrades, alongside replacement of ageing lighting and audio-visual systems to meet contemporary performance standards. Accessibility improvements were integrated throughout, supporting broader community use on reopening.
With the theatre closed for the duration, the focus was on returning the venue to service as quickly as possible for the local community, including nearby schools that regularly book the space for performing arts programmes and events. While the programme itself was straightforward, the refurbishment presented practical challenges typical of theatre environments. Works were undertaken around tiered seating, tight back-of-house zones, and limited catwalk access, with extensive services and finishes located at height. Careful planning was required to safely access these areas while protecting existing architectural elements and maintaining quality across the upgraded spaces.
