SHAPE Completes Launceston’s Iconic Albert Hall Revitalisation

The 130‑year‑old Albert Hall in Launceston is a cornerstone of Tasmania’s cultural life. Its renewal has been an opportunity for our SHAPE Tasmania team to honour its historic architecture while introducing modern functionality.

This redevelopment involved the major renewal of the 1980s‑era Eastern Wing and a comprehensive refurbishment of the Great Hall and surrounding spaces. The result is a venue that is more functional, accessible and sustainable, ready to welcome the next century of community events.

A major upgrade of the Eastern Wing has delivered modern spaces for events, meetings and hospitality, along with upgraded amenities and improved accessibility for visitors and organisers. Works on the ground floor introduced a new reception area, foyer, café and function kitchen, while the first floor gained a renovated foyer and meeting room. A new audio‑visual and lighting system was incorporated to meet today’s event standards, along with extensive system and amenity improvements including heating, toilets and furniture.

Externally, extensive structural works were completed, alongside the introduction of a contemporary curved perforated aluminium façade inspired by the Victorian metalwork found throughout nearby City Park. The façade allows natural light to filter through the building while complementing the Hall’s original architecture and strengthening its connection to the surrounding parkland.

The project also introduced a new ground plane and public terrace that links Albert Hall more clearly with City Park, improving accessibility and strengthening the visual and physical connection between two of Launceston’s most important civic spaces.

Tom Sparkes, General Manager, SHAPE Tasmania, said:

“Revitalising Albert Hall was an exciting opportunity for the SHAPE Tasmania team to honour the rich heritage of this Launceston landmark. We combined new build expertise with careful heritage restoration to deliver a stunning transformation that brings Albert Hall into its next chapter, ensuring it remains a world‑class venue for future generations.”

Throughout the project, the team worked closely with the following partners Collective Consulting, Commercial Project Delivery, Terroir and City of Launceston to ensure every modern addition complemented the building’s original features. Careful planning and construction methods protected fragile heritage elements while maintaining the integrity of this important cultural landmark.

Albert Hall has long been central to Launceston’s cultural life, hosting graduations, concerts, exhibitions, antique fairs and major conferences. With its upgrades complete, and event bookings managed by Theatre North, it now has the flexibility, facilities and technology to support even more performances, celebrations and shared experiences for the next hundred years.
