SHAPE has officially completed the refurbishment of the iconic Hotel Allen in Townsville’s coastal suburb of North Ward, marking a major milestone in revitalising one of the region’s most recognised hospitality venues.
In partnership with Australian Venue Co, the project has transformed the ground-floor licensed venue into a vibrant destination that welcomes both locals and visitors, while carefully preserving the character and legacy that has made Hotel Allen a cherished part of the community since 1942.
Situated on a prominent 6,186sqm corner site, the two-storey venue now features a sports bar, beer garden, bistro, gaming room and alfresco dining. The refurbishment includes refreshed public spaces designed to elevate the customer experience while maintaining the venue’s familiar identity and charm.
The scope encompassed extensive aesthetic upgrades across key hospitality areas, alongside significant improvements to essential services, such as a new main switchboard, grease trap, mechanical plant, and fire services upgrades. These enhancements modernise the venue’s functionality and support its long-term operation.
David Wood, General Manager at SHAPE QLD, emphasised the project’s reflection of SHAPE’s capability to deliver complex hospitality refurbishments while honouring the identity of a beloved community venue.
“Hotel Allen has a long history in Townsville, so the refurbishment needed to respect the character people know and value while providing a modern hospitality experience,” said Mr Wood.
“By collaborating closely with Australian Venue Co throughout the project, our team carefully coordinated the refurbishment to ensure efficient delivery to a high standard. The result is a revitalised venue that balances upgraded functionality with the heritage and atmosphere that make Hotel Allen so well-known within the community,” he added.
Now open to the public, the revitalised Hotel Allen strengthens its position as a key hospitality destination in North Queensland, providing renewed spaces for locals and visitors to gather while supporting the ongoing revitalisation of Townsville’s North Ward precinct.
