As the Mail Centre remained in operation during the upgrades, maintaining business continuity for Australia Post was vital.

The project required the removal and reconstruction of internal walls within the existing centre to provide sufficient space for the new mail-handling system. The project had significant structural steel, cladding and concreting scopes which required a careful and considered safety methodology.

The Mail Centre upgrades were required to be completed before November in 2019 due to the high volume of deliveries that are processed between November and January. To ensure the programme was maintained, SHAPE tracked and updated the programme on a daily basis which identified and highlighted any scopes that required additional attention before it could impact the timeframes.

To ensure business continuity for Australia Post, SHAPE held daily pre-start meetings which involved various stakeholders. These meetings discussed the programme – including forward works, planned areas of isolation, and operational constraints. The meetings facilitated a flexible approach to balancing the construction works and daily operations, without significantly impacting one-another.
