Complex upgrade delivered across four stages with careful planning to minimise tenant disruption.

Curtin University engaged SHAPE to deliver the redevelopment of the Dome Project its Bentley campus, centred around the refurbishment of the iconic Geodesic Dome.

Led by Curtin University’s Properties, Facilities and Development team, the project involved transforming the existing structure into an open outdoor pavilion for events, social gatherings, and everyday campus use. Works delivered by SHAPE included selective demolition of auxiliary rooms to open the structure, structural remediation to the existing 1970s dome, roof repairs, extensive brick restoration, and the creation of new access points, while maintaining the building’s distinctive architectural character.
The broader redevelopment also included a structural extension and fitout to Edinburgh Sports Pavillion, upgrades to Curtin Stadium’s northern façade, and modifications with a new entry canopy, services screening, and new southern entry points.

Approximately 7,000sqm of landscaping and civil works were undertaken across the precinct to support Curtin University’s vision for a revitalised, connected and flexible outdoor environment capable of accommodating events and daily campus activity. New storerooms were constructed beneath turf embankments, providing secure storage while preserving the landscape character of the site. The works also introduced improved accessibility, including new ACROD drop-off bays.

Delivered within a live university environment, the project required careful planning and coordination between Curtin University, SHAPE, consultants and contractors to manage site logistics, limited laydown areas, and ongoing campus operations.

The scope also included asbestos removal, structural reinforcement to the existing dome, and complex services integration within the geodesic façade system. Working closely with Curtin University, SHAPE responded to programme challenges and evolving site conditions while maintaining progress across multiple concurrent work areas.
