ADFA Chemistry Lab Refurbishment
SHAPE was engaged by Aurecon to deliver the Australian Defence Force Academy Chemistry Lab Refurbishment.
ADFA - Defence Chemistry Laboratory

Client: Department of Defence
Client Project Manager: Aurecon
Delivery Model: Lump Sum
Location: Canberra, ACT
Duration: 48 Weeks
Project Size: 2,300m2

The objective of the refurbishment was to transform the 40-year-old labs into new vibrant work areas for both Graduate and Undergraduate students.

Works consisted of the refurbishment of six labs, multiple specialised storage rooms, specialised distillation areas and preparation rooms. Services works took place over five levels, with the main fit out works being carried out across two levels.

The services works were the most complex part of the fitout, as the labs called for a specialised fume extraction system, high purity laboratory gases, specialised chemical resistant electrical fittings, fire suppression systems, emergency hydraulic wash points & fire protection.

The remainder of the building was still in occupation by ADFA throughout the whole construction process, meaning formal disruptions were kept to a minimum. Refurbishing a 40-year-old building brought some complexities in bringing items up to current codes & standards. However, SHAPE & Aurecon were able to successfully overcome any issues that had arisen.
