Coinciding with National Homelessness Week 2022, SHAPE Melbourne has officially announced the completion of the first phase of its major pro-bono refurbishment of Launch Housing’s crisis accommodation centre in Melbourne’s Southbank.
The second and final phase of the project will kick off in October 2022, following SHAPE’s second successful annual charity event in May.
SHAPE first partnered with Launch Housing – a secular Melbourne-based community organisation that delivers homelessness services and life-changing housing supports to disadvantaged Victorians – for its Annual Charity Golf Day in April 2021.
Instead of donating cash, subcontractor partners were invited to pledge their time, tools and materials to undertake the major refurbishment of the 46-room crisis accommodation centre, as part of SHAPE’s ReSHAPE initiative. The facility offers short stays, case management, healthcare, and crisis support to people in need of shelter and care.
The pledges resulted in SHAPE and participating subcontractors completing the first phase of the project, worth more than $313,000. Communal spaces and 20 rooms of the 46-room facility were upgraded with new wardrobes, kitchen joinery, sinks and taps, desks and shelving, flooring, blinds, and the walls were repainted. This transformation provides inviting, comfortable and dignified spaces for Launch Housing’s clients to aid their recovery from the traumas associated with homelessness.
Following the completion of the first phase of the project, SHAPE organised a second annual charity night in May, at Ballers Clubhouse in Melbourne, to gain the necessary support from their subcontractor partners for the second phase of the project. Thanks to the generous support of 37 subbies and suppliers, who once again pledged their skills, time and materials, SHAPE Victoria will officially kick-off this final phase in October 2022.
This phase of the project will see the complete upgrade of the remaining 26 rooms of the 46-room facility, further common areas and the 24-hour front desk and reception area. In addition, SHAPE Victoria has salvaged good quality building materials from other projects which were destined for landfill, through it’s ReSHAPE programme, that will be repurposed for Launch Housing.
We’re proud that Launch Housing’s clients have already begun utilising the revamped rooms. The positive impact of this project can be witnessed from the statement below, which we’ve kindly been allowed to publish:
“When I got here, I was broken. I had nothing and I didn’t know where I was supposed to go… I was given my room and I expected that I would be in a prison cell. Instead, I got to the room… and I instantly felt like I was in someone’s spare room at their house. It was beautiful. I dropped my bags down and went straight to bed. It was the first proper sleep I had in months. I could see a future again for the first time in ages and I knew I would be comfortable here. I can’t thank you enough.”
Instead of donating cash, subcontractor partners were invited to pledge their time, tools and materials to undertake the major refurbishment of the 46-room crisis accommodation centre, as part of SHAPE’s ReSHAPE initiative.
