Amanda Hackett joined SHAPE in 2011 as a Site Coordinator and has recently moved into the role of Senior Site Manager. We caught up with her to have a chat about what life has been like at SHAPE and as a woman in the construction industry.
Why do you like working for SHAPE? What keeps you here?
SHAPE is a great company. The opportunities for career advancement are excellent, and it is a fun, exciting place to work. The people and culture make coming to work a real pleasure. SHAPE allow your personality to shine through; they see it as an asset.
Why would you recommend SHAPE as a place to work?
SHAPE invests in people. You can start your career at cadet/construction worker level, and your career progression is supported with training and mentorship from senior team members.
You will work on a diverse range of projects, where you will have the opportunity to put the skills you learn into practice, continually being supported along the way.
What do you find most satisfying about your role?
There are two parts of my role which I find the most satisfying; mentoring junior members of the team, seeing their growth in the business, and passing on the knowledge I have gained during my years in the construction industry and time working for SHAPE.
Also, there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of seeing a project at completion looking back and seeing how we have brought a workspace to life.
What is your career highlight so far?
My career highlight to date was winning the National Association of Women in Construction’s Outstanding Achievement in Fitout Award. SHAPE has always acknowledged my achievements during my years in the company, and to be nominated and receive this industry award for my hard work was a massive achievement and one I am extremely proud of.
What advice would you give to a female wanting to work in the construction industry?
Building and construction are not only for the boys, but it is also a career that is exciting, changeable and lucrative. No one day is the same and every project brings its own challenges. It is an industry where you are constantly learning. You will learn every day and be given plenty of scope to rise in the ranks. Have the confidence to back yourself, be resilient, determined and you will go far.
