The SHAPE Brisbane office has recently earned its 6 Star Green Star rating, becoming the second SHAPE office to achieve this award. This rating is the highest recognition within the globally recognised Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) sustainability rating system. The SHAPE Brisbane office joins the ranks of the SHAPE Sydney office, which also holds a 6 Star Green Star rating, and the SHAPE Adelaide office, which has achieved 5 Star Green Star.

SHAPE Brisbane undertook a comprehensive refurbishment of its existing office, opting to stay at its current home, Level 5, 175 Eagle Street. This inner-city waterfront site offers incredible views of the Storey Bridge.

Design outcome

The purpose behind SHAPE’s Brisbane office fitout was to create an agile workplace where people feel comfortable and at home, can collaborate seamlessly, and enjoy breathtaking views of Brisbane water. With this in mind, the team worked closely with the designers at Hassell to design a space that reflected SHAPE’s fun, warm, inviting, and inventive personality and didn’t feel too commercial.

A feature of the fitout is how every element and area seamlessly connect to one another, serving multiple purposes and allowing for a smooth flow throughout the office. From the breakout space, perfect for entertaining and events, to cozy couches for relaxation and even a golf simulator, every aspect was meticulously planned to provide flexibility in the workspace while retaining the culture that SHAPE continues to uphold.

The colour palette chosen was neutral and warm, with unique lighting features that journey throughout the space to guide the eye to the open gathering space.

Notably, the design focused on providing a space that could cater to industry events, which SHAPE is well-known for in Brisbane. The flexibility to accommodate such events was a significant consideration during the planning phase.

David Wood, General Manager of QLD, says, “The design outcome of SHAPE’s new Brisbane office successfully created a space with a family feel, with an open-door policy – where everyone, from family members to friends, can come and enjoy this beautifully designed workspace. It truly encapsulates the essence of a ‘home away from home’ in the heart of the office.”

The design incorporated various sustainable principles and strategic planning to optimise natural light and views with floor-to-ceiling windows, contributing to the creation of an open and spacious environment that positively influences sustainable human health in the workspace.

Achieving sustainability

Sustainability was paramount throughout the project, with a target of achieving a 6 Star Green Star rating. To meet this goal, the team worked closely with sustainability consultants, ReWild Agency, from concept to completion. The design incorporated various sustainable principles and strategic planning to optimise natural light and views with floor-to-ceiling windows, contributing to the creation of an open and spacious environment that positively influences sustainable human health in the workspace.

The office interior prioritises sustainability through the use of recyclable products, donation of existing furniture and sustainable product materials like FSC timber, cork, and natural stone, incorporating a mix of organic materials, as well as compliant PVC in cables and blinds.

The team implemented comprehensive measures for operational waste management, indoor air quality, acoustic and lighting comfort, and the selection of materials with reduced indoor pollutants. The space was further enhanced with integrated planting and lush greenery, adding a touch of nature to the space.

During the build, the team achieved an impressive 90% recycling rate for construction and demolition waste and implemented a range of sustainable site practices.

Further, the project achieved high sustainability ratings across the innovation criteria, with features like ultra-low VOC products, implementation of a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on site, and the promotion of local indigenous artists’ work in our new space.

“At SHAPE, we’ve set our sights on a net-zero future by 2030. Achieving carbon neutrality was a significant milestone for us, laying the foundation for our commitment to sustainability. It only made sense that our new Brisbane office exemplifies this dedication, with a meticulous focus on eco-conscious design and practices. Pursuing an internationally recognised 6 Star Green Star rating reflects our unwavering commitment to building a sustainable, forward-thinking workplace for our team and the environment,” said David.

The dedicated effort of the designers, consultants and SHAPE project team ensured that the team’s needs were met, resulting in a fitout that truly reflects the company’s culture and values.
