Another knockout day for SHAPE Sydney’s Annual Charity Soccer Day 2023

In its Annual Charity Soccer Day 2023, the SHAPE Sydney team rallied with its subcontractors to raise $160k for its charity partners: MATES in Construction (MIC) and SeeBeyondBorders.

SHAPE has been a longstanding partner of SeeBeyondBorders and MIC, donating more than $1.1 million combined to both organisations since 2013 and 2016, respectively. SeeBeyondBorders works towards stopping the poverty cycle through education in Cambodia, developing school infrastructure in rural areas, providing access to education and supporting local families. With suicide being the biggest killer in the construction industry, MIC provides support for suicide prevention and early intervention through informative workshops, field officers, training, a support line, and case management.

This year’s Annual Soccer Day saw an attendance of 235 of SHAPE’s Sydney team, participating subcontractors, volunteers, and charity representatives. The event is part of SHAPE’s commitment to giving back and will contribute towards its target to raise $737k this financial year.

On 17 March, the event kicked off bright and early at Fraser Park – Sydney Portugal Community Club with a Welcome to Country by Michael West from the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.

The Sydney team played alongside 28 subcontractor teams in a friendly soccer tournament. A big congratulations to MOJ Projects for winning the tournament, scoring 3-0 against X-CLUSIVE Group, and remaining undefeated throughout the day.

Following the grand finale, SHAPE enjoyed a comedy set hosted by comedian Rob Shehadie, star of Australian TV show Fat Pizza and his former co-star and comedian Tahir Bilgi. This event was an exciting lead up to a bidding war between subcontractors for a chance to ‘Dunk the Boss’ into a water tank. The highest bidders won the chance to dunk Phillip Wicks, General Manager of SHAPE NSW, James Fitzgerald, Senior Commercial Manager and Stewart Mcleod, Operations Manager. In all the excitement Steven Latham, Commercial Manager and Cameron Aitken volunteered to be dunked; all in all, raising a total of $27.6k.

A huge thank you to the SHAPE volunteers who spent the day raising money through raffle ticket sales from both the SHAPE Sydney team and subcontractors. This year’s raffle prizes included an afternoon sail on the SHAPE boat, a ‘Tradie Kit’ including a Tundra 45 in white, half gallon jug in black and a Hopper Flip 12 in Charcoal, graciously donated by YETI, Nespresso by Delonghi Coffee Machine, donated by Harvey Norman, and Sydney 4 Attraction Family Passes sponsored by Merlin Entertainments.

Thank you to the generous and hardworking subcontractors who took part and donated on the day, and to the SHAPE Soccer Day committee for organising the event.
