SHAPE Wins Two Master Builders SA Building Excellence Awards 2022

SHAPE has taken home two awards at the Master Builders South Australia Building Excellence Awards 2022 for the Memorial Hospital CSSD Upgrades – Stage 2 and 3 project and Flinders St Fitout.

The Awards are recognised as one of the industry’s oldest and most prestigious award ceremonies, celebrating excellence in construction, workmanship, innovation, and dedication to the industry.

This year’s Awards programme featured 180 of South Australia’s most outstanding projects, submitted by 71 builders and specialist contractors across 47 categories. These projects, completed between 1 April 2021 and 1 April 2022, were assessed by 22 judges.

SHAPE took out the top spot in the Commercial Refurbishment / Redevelopment up to $5M category for the Memorial Hospital CSSD Upgrade.

SHAPE’s Flinders St Fitout (undisclosed client) was awarded the winner of the Commercial Fit-Out over $5M category.

The projects were both recognised for implementing a high-level of innovation and quality, and managing safety and environmental aspects, while delivering exceptional construction management.

Grant Houghton, SHAPE Senior Project Manager, who led the team on both projects, said of the wins: “We’re incredibly honoured that two of our South Australian projects have been recognised with such a significant award. Both projects were complex, and our exceptional teams delivered on quality, budget, timelessness and safety while managing difficult live environments. I’m proud of our hardworking and dedicated teams, subcontractors and the broader SHAPE staff and their commitment to delivering excellence for our clients.

Held on Friday, 19 August 2022 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, the Awards gala was attended by more than 1,310 building and construction industry professionals.

A huge congratulations to our hardworking SHAPE team in Adelaide and all of our partners on this incredible achievement.

Memorial Hospital CSSD Upgrades – Stage 2 and 3

Winner: Commercial Refurbishment / Redevelopment up to $5M

The Memorial Hospital in North Adelaide required an upgrade to its Central Sterile Service Department (CSSD) to maintain compliance standardsin South Australia. The scope involved a comprehensive mechanical services upgrade, installation of new sterilisation equipment and associated services and a new sewer connection. As part of the upgrades, ACHA also saw the opportunity to modify the existing layout of its CSSD to improve the flow of work and movement and the overall service delivery within the hospital.

Judges’ comments: “SA Health rated this project high risk due to the requirement of maintaining Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) operations and strict infection control. The project team implemented several innovative solutions and staging that required detailed daily consultation with the hospital staff, managing quality, safety and environmental aspects of this project very effectively. SHAPE’s attention to detail and team approach was a major contributing factor in the successful outcome of this project. An outstanding job by SHAPE. Congratulations!”

Flinders St Fitout (undisclosed client)

Winner: Commercial Fit-Out over $5M

Following a new lease agreement, the client identified an opportunity to upgrade its head office to maintain a high-quality, contemporary environment. SHAPE delivered the 10 floor fitout across three key stages. Many of the floors comprise varying workspaces, meeting rooms and breakout spaces. The client also desired a welcome floor with a small exhibition space, a training centre for their technical staff which involved a high level of IT integration, and the construction of a winter garden.

Judges’ comments: “The Flinders Street fit-out was a credit to SHAPE Australia. The project was made very complex by the client’s requirement that the noise transmission from work areas through the atrium be strictly controlled. SHAPE managed this very effectively with the development of modular reusable acoustic hoardings. The quality of workmanship was exceptional throughout. SHAPE’s ability to plan and execute a challenging contract whilst maintaining a very high level of performance across quality, safety and environmental aspects all whilst maintaining excellent relationships across all stakeholders was a highlight. Whilst there was only one entry in this category, SHAPE achieved a high level of excellence they should be very proud of. Congratulations!”
