DLG SHAPE wins MBA VIC award for Koorie Heritage Trust project

DLG SHAPE was recognised at the Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV) 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards, taking home a win for its Koorie Heritage Trust Building Expansion project.

The Master Builders Association of Victoria awards are an annual event which showcase and celebrate excellence in craftmanship, innovation, workmanship and dedication to the industry. The awards ceremony took place at the Palladium, at Crown on Friday, 9 August 2024.

DLG SHAPE’s work for Koorie Heritage Trust received the top position in the Excellence in Fitout $5M-$10M category. The project involved the expansion of the Koorie Heritage Trust at Birrarung Building in Fed Square, to occupy all three levels and the creation of an independent First Peoples art and cultural centre. DLG SHAPE refurbished Levels 1 and 3, while completing a demolition and fitout of Level 2. The sleek design was achieved in collaboration with Greenaway Architects, Architecture Associates and Lyons Architects, and reflects the important exchange between Country and community.

Michael Manikas, General Manager – DLG SHAPE, said “This project has established an important place in the Koorie community, one where members can come together and connect with living culture. The award shines a light on the importance of cultural exchange with our communities, and how we can empower them through collaboration and design”.

The works included a new public foyer, two exhibition gallery spaces, an education space and multi-purpose meeting and function rooms, among more. In addition to the works, the team carried out essential service upgrades, all of which were completed in a live environment in one of the busiest areas of Melbourne.

Commitment to both efficiency and community engagement remained a top priority throughout the project’s 19-week construction.
