SHAPE was appointed to deliver the refurbishment of building 1, level 4 at Canberra Hospital.

Client:
ACT Health

Designer:

Delivery Model:
Design and Construct

Location:
Canberra, ACT

Duration:
52 weeks

Project Size:
2,366 m2

The project involved converting the former paediatric ward into an aged care unit and rehabilitation ward to allow for the decanting of wards 11A and 11B from building 3 and building 1. The objective was to deliver the project without disrupting essential services, and to maintain constant communication with all stakeholders while ensuring sensitivity.

The safety and comfort of the existing patients and staff was paramount during this project.  The client identified that there was to be minimal disruptions to clinical services and hospital operations, and that the construction needed to be completed in a safe, timely manner. To manage the disturbances to the hospital efficiently, we had weekly meetings and incorporated flexible staging to work around the hospital’s operations. Noisy works were carried out during the day and night works were restricted to non-noisy trades. Safety onsite was managed with strict audits and client safety walks.

Over the 12 months, our team maintained sensitivity around patient zones to allow for hospital continuity.
